Fighter Pilot Nerds
There’s a fighter pilot variant that, for lack of a better word, would be described as nerds, maybe even geeks. These are folks that have moved out of the operational fighter pilot world to become test pilots. They still fly fighter type aircraft and the work they do is extremely important but they have very different goals from the typical fighter pilot. A regular fighter pilot wants to hone his skills in the anticipation of one day employing them in support of their country’s interests and needs. Fighter pilots who become test pilots are wired differently. They are aeronautical engineers who have equations of motion, aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, aircraft structure and more bouncing around in their craniums. Some of them want to become astronauts for goodness sakes.
I was talking with one of these types of fighter pilots, a friend of mine, in one of my previous squadrons. He mentioned that he was reading about quantum theory the night before. Realizing that I had been reading a National Lampoon the very same night before, I knew that we were on two different levels of intelligence. While these types are in the operational fighter pilot world they’re not always the most tactical guy or even a top flyer but one thing they are is kickass smart.
