Weird World of London

Posted by aaron on July 14, 2009

First, I hope you noticed the very clever play on words.  Weird World of London as compared to the movie title, Werewolf of London.  Very lofty thinking there.

You may have noticed over the last couple of months that I have been spending a good bit of time in London, England and Borg has been in various oriental hot spots like China. Funny thing is, everywhere Borg goes in China or Malaysia or Singapore he ends up in some place that's trying to emulate an Irish or English pub. Well, I've done the real deal, and while pub crawling around London I've seen some quite interesting oddities that I thought you might be interested in.
Before I get into those though, I'd like to say that I think English/Irish pubs are one of the greatest inventions of mankind. Every one of them is different (except for the unpleasant cookie cutter corporate, stainless steel, hey-look-at-me-I'm-a-pub pub), every one unique. People are always friendly and willing to have a chat. It's humanity at its best.
OK, here's some of the strange stuff I've seen in London over the last few months. Strange, but fun, and really when you get right down to it, kickass!!

This notice was above the door leading into the old bar at
Ye Old Cheshire Cheese.  This pub dates back to 1602 and
is definitely in the discussion when it comes to oldest pub in
London.  But once I had my beer and thought about this
statement for a while, it made me wonder, "If no women were
allowed, how did they pick up chicks back then?"

Ye Old Cheshire Cheese

Man, they get right to the point.

How much demand can there be?

Well, whatever it is, they've been doing it since 1956.

Going to be a lot of humping around here.

Somewhere a village needs this guy.

Why the golden genitals?

Now this I found a bit disturbing.  I'd been to the Bat & Ball before near
Leicester Square so I was greatly surprised when I was planning to stop
for a beer and found out that it was under new management and
the name was now Fudge. I'm sure they really pack them in at Fudge.
Made me wonder why they didn't keep the athletic theme and name
the place Pitchers & Catchers.
