Bardog Tavern in Memphis

When in Memphis the next time I recommend that you take the time for a few amber nectars or your favorite highball at the Bardog. This place is located on Monroe Avenue in downtown Memphis just one block over from Union Avenue. The place is my kind of joint with the dive look and feel that can trap you into an all-afternoon session of day-drinking or work to your advantage for a late nighter with the bros. The food there is awesome and the bartenders will poor you a great drink. For those of you that are wine drinkers, they have an ever-changing wine list as well. You will fit in with any dress; the clientele range from reprobates, like me in jeans, to suits and ties. That pretty much sums it up; when a bar attracts everyone it is usually kickass!

They also have a cool advertisement on their website; it says: “Sit. Stay. Drink… Good Boy”. That is double kickass clever! Their site is www.bardog.com and it’s really easy to navigate. This place took care of some of my friends during a recent medical emergency that had a bro held up in a downtown hospital. The Bardog went over the top to take care of the family with copious amounts of wine and food.

Dive atmosphere, cold brew, Jack Daniel’s and hospitality. Sounds like a fighter pilot's dream to me.

Tracking Kill on Rudolph

I recently finished our annual deer hunt with my two boys here in the People’s Republic of Minnesota. For those of you who can, I highly recommend hunting with your kids and exercise your second amendment right, pass on to your kids the joy of smelling gun powder, and put some food on the table while you’re at it. I cant’ think of a much better way to get some great father son/daughter time then spending a fall day with you kid in a target rich environment waiting to saddle up for a kill.

We were a bit concerned about seeing a lot of deer because of the late harvest this year. There was still a lot of corn for those rascals to hide in. But after thinking we were going to get skunked, I woke up from a nap in my tree and decided to check six and had a tally on a nice 8 point buck. Raising my weapon to get my nose in lead (none required since he was giving me the RCA dog look), in plane, and knowing I was in range I squeezed off a round at about 100 yards. I was dumbfounded when my bandit unloaded for knots and took off like a scalded ape. How the hell did I miss? Oh well no time for that, now it was time to try and hit a moving target, and two shots later the bandit was accelerating out of range.

I decided to call my number two son in the aux radio (cell phone) and let him know there was a bandit inbound heading for his cap. “Hey Mike, big buck heading your way that I just shot at.” He no sooner hung up when I started hearing what sounded like a two second burst from a M61A1 20mm Gatling gun. I waited a few minutes and called him back and asked what luck? His response was classic--”Well Dad, I didn’t miss!” Normally I don’t like my kid being a smart ass, but you gotta hand it to him I deserved that one.

So I climbed down from my tree and got to Mikes deer so I could take my rash of crap for him out shooting me. After cleaning the animal, we took the required hero shot and all decided to move back to our caps. My brother-in-law walked about a hundred yards and stumbled on the buck I had shot at, so I guess I was not that bad a shot after all. Overall, a good time was had by all. That night we raised our glass to a successful hunt and I used the cleaner version of a classic fighter pilot toast”

“Gun Powder and Women, live by one--die by the other, and love the smell of both!”

Were Wilbur and Orville Fighter Pilots?

They didn’t drink. They didn’t smoke. They didn’t chase women. They didn’t cuss. They didn’t brag or like to talk about themselves. They didn’t wear a big watch. How could they possibly be fighter pilots. What they did do was never give up and they were, without a doubt, geniuses. Two typical fighter pilot traits, so maybe they were.

I read a kickass book about the Wright brothers last year, The Bishop’s Boys. It’s an amazing, detailed story of how Orville and Wilbur invented the airplane and what happened to them after that phenomenal event. Their initiatives and intelligence was nothing short of brilliant. When they weren’t getting the expected lift out of their wing design they built their own wind tunnel to test wing shapes and constructed their own lift tables. When no American auto maker could provide them with an engine light enough and powerful enough, they built their own. Amazingly, they paid for it all with their own money which, even more incredibly, cost them just $1000.

Because flying has been such a major part of my life for over three decades I had to get out to see where the Wright brothers first made powered flight a reality. So, two weeks ago, my wife and I flew out to the east coast and then drove to Kitty Hawk. It was a kickass trip. It was so informative my wife came away understanding lift vs. drag and that’s someone who has a problem with left or right and north or south.

Kitty Hawk doesn’t look like it did over a hundred years ago but for me it was awe inspiring to stand where that very first flight started its takeoff and then walk the 120 feet to where the first powered flight landed. They flew four times that day, the last over 800 feet and you can see where it happened. You can stand at the top of Kill Devils Hill where the brothers tested and flew their gliders which eventually evolved into the first Wright Flyer. The display facilities are OK, somewhat quaint, but the overall experience of being there, where it all started, for was me was kickass inspiring.

Yeah, Kitty Hawk is a bit out of the way, and that’s why the Wright brothers went there, but if you’re anywhere close, it’s well worth your time to make the trip.

Oh yeah, were the Wright brothers fighter pilots? Yeah, they were but probably the fighter pilot nerd category, and thank goodness they were.

You know when it came to being a kickass wingman, Orville and Wilbur really took care of each other. Once they became world famous they had chicks chasing all over the place. Since neither one of them ever married, it's pretty obvious that they did a good job stiff arming the fortune seekers, charlatans and all sorts of floosies.

Without a doubt, if Orville and Wilbur were still around they'd be doing their shopping at the FU Store and they'd be wearing one of our newest designs. You can get it in the Kickass Fighter Pilot Stuff section of the FU Store.

No. 10 Saloon

I recently had the chance to kick back a few cold ones in Deadwood, South Dakota and decided on settling into the famous No. 10 Saloon. The bar has all the feel of an 1800’s location to include the chair Wild Bill Hickok was sitting in when Jack McCall blew his brain pan apart. I gambled a little and came away meeting my goal of drinking in another historic cantina on my continuing lifelong bar tour. When I got back to home base I decided to get the facts on the No. 10 and pass them on to you as a history lesson from FU. Below is the short breakdown of the Saloon and, I'm sad to say, I was not in the original and couldn’t have been if I tried.

The original location of Nuttall & Mann's #10 Saloon was at 624 Main Street, but burned down in the tragic fire of 1879. There are no known photographs of the original saloon. Today, the original location is occupied by the Wild West Casino. In 1938, a "new" Old Style Saloon #10 was recreated across the street at 657 Main Street, which continues to operate today.

It was at this location that Wild Bill Hickok, famed gunfighter, who most certainly would have been a fighter pilot if he'd be lucky enough to live in that era, was shot by Jack McCall on August 2, 1876. The prior evening when Hickok was playing poker with several men, including McCall, Jack lost heavily. Wild Bill generously gave him back enough money to buy something to eat, but advised him not to play again until he could cover his losses. This obviously humiliated McCall who would take his revenge the next day.

The next afternoon when Wild Bill entered Nuttall & Mann's Saloon he found Charlie Rich sitting in his preferred seat. After some hesitation, Wild Bill joined the game, reluctantly seating himself with his back to the door and the bar---a fatal mistake. Jack McCall, drinking heavily at the bar, saw Hickok enter the saloon, taking a seat at his regular table in the corner near the door.

McCall slowly walked around to the corner of the saloon where Hickok was playing his game. From under his coat, McCall pulled a double-action .45 pistol, shouted “Take that!” and shot Wild Bill Hickok in the back of the head, killing him instantly. Hickok had been holding a pair of eights, and a pair of Aces, which has ever since been known as the "dead man's hand."

So, in conclusion, I recommend drinking and gambling at the No. 10 Saloon but go in with the knowledge that you are NOT in the original. With that trivia fact, you can make the non-fighter pilot, who might say they've had a drink in the original, feel stupid and you can walk away superior in your vast experience and FU given education. We suggest that for the next few days that you play poker with your back to the wall as well as we recommend not repeating Wild Bill’s mistake.

You know the perfect shirt to wear into No. 10 Saloon is available in the FU Store. Wild Bill would have worn a shirt from the FU Store if he could have. Even that prick Jack McCall would have worn a shirt from the FU Store because he wanted to be somebody. Too bad he didn't know that all it takes for that to happen is to get a shirt from the FU Store. No need to shoot someone. Get your shirt from the FU Store today.

Kickass Bar. Not for the Squeamish

On a recent trip to Madrid I had the opportunity to visit a rather unique, kickass bar. Located in Plaza Mayor is La Torre del Oro. Small, which is not uncommon in Madrid, but full of character. La Torre del Oro is a bull fighting bar. The TV is showing bull fights, the wall is covered with pictures of bull fights, matadors and bulls, and overhead are mounted former fighting bulls. You get a little appetizer with each cerveze and a plate of olives. No place to sit but that's OK because that just makes the conversation more lively and causes you to roam around and check out the pictures and bullfighting memorabilia.

From the pictures on the wall it's apparent that, at least once in a while, the bull wins. A lot of the pictures are of matadors getting gored, matadors getting flipped, matadors in surgery getting sutured up. One particular picture, which the bartender pointed out, is quite alarming. A matador is in the process of being repeatedly gored and, in the photo, one of his body parts is flying over his head. It's one of his testicles!! Yeah, one of his nuts flying right over his head!! YIKES!!!! Damn, that hurts just to think about it. Don't know what the end result was though.

La Torre del Oro. Check it out if you get a chance. You will agree, it kicksass!!

After all this bullfighting stuff you're probably interested in a kickass bull-type design at the FU Store. Yeah, we got one. It's new and hot off the press. Below are the front and back designs and, speaking of nads, check out the ones on that bull.

FRONT

BACK

Weird World of London

First, I hope you noticed the very clever play on words. Weird World of London as compared to the movie title, Werewolf of London. Very lofty thinking there.

You may have noticed over the last couple of months that I have been spending a good bit of time in London, England and Borg has been in various oriental hot spots like China. Funny thing is, everywhere Borg goes in China or Malaysia or Singapore he ends up in some place that's trying to emulate an Irish or English pub. Well, I've done the real deal, and while pub crawling around London I've seen some quite interesting oddities that I thought you might be interested in.

Before I get into those though, I'd like to say that I think English/Irish pubs are one of the greatest inventions of mankind. Every one of them is different (except for the unpleasant cookie cutter corporate, stainless steel, hey-look-at-me-I'm-a-pub pub), every one unique. People are always friendly and willing to have a chat. It's humanity at its best.

OK, here's some of the strange stuff I've seen in London over the last few months. Strange, but fun, and really when you get right down to it, kickass!!

This notice was above the door leading into the old bar at
Ye Old Cheshire Cheese. This pub dates back to 1602 and
is definitely in the discussion when it comes to oldest pub in
London. But once I had my beer and thought about this
statement for a while, it made me wonder, "If no women were
allowed, how did they pick up chicks back then?"

Man, they get right to the point.

How much demand can there be?

Well, whatever it is, they've been doing it since 1956.

Going to be a lot of humping around here.

Somewhere a village needs this guy.

Why the golden genitals?

Now this I found a bit disturbing. I'd been to the Bat & Ball before near
Leicester Square so I was greatly surprised when I was planning to stop
for a beer and found out that it was under new management and
the name was now Fudge. I'm sure they really pack them in at Fudge.
Made me wonder why they didn't keep the athletic theme and name
the place Pitchers & Catchers.

On the Scene in Malaysia

Situated in Penang, in the George Town area, lies the Eastern and Oriental Hotel, full of British tradition and history. A short walk from the lobby and you can see the British Empire in action as the remnants of their imperialism are still evident in the form of old forts and cannons. While the area is strictly owned by the Malaysians today, the British are here as tourists and they are in great supply.

All of that being said, my real reason for this kickass report is the bar in the lobby, known as Farquhar’s Bar. This British pub has been around a long time and has the entire atmosphere of any pub in England minus the shitty weather. Step outside the ocean view doors and you’re quickly reminded that you aren’t in merry, merry England. Stay inside, with the doors closed, and you’ll forget where you’re at.

 Inside

Outside

British and Australians are available for plenty of good drink and cheer as you contemplate the walk across the street to the more contemporary night life of Malaysia. I, personally never left the pub. The lights and discos across the avenue had nothing on the traditions of the British pub and cold beer (and shitty English food). If you’re in Penang and want a taste of the west, I suggest you step back 100 years and enjoy Farquhar’s Pub. I’m going again in a few minutes.

Best Side

Best Kind of Capitalism in a Communist Country

PADDY FIELD, IRISH BAR IN GUANGZHOU, CHINA

I had an opportunity to spend a little time in China this week; in fact, I’m writing this trip report from my room in Guangzhou at this moment. This town is profoundly “real China” in every sense of the word. Very few English speakers and not, at first glance, a place for the standard American to feel at home. Like all first glances, there is more if you look a little deeper. I got on line and looked for my standard, the Irish bar, and much to my delight; I found one of world class. The Paddy Field is located just behind the Garden Hotel on a side street. The Garden Hotel is probably the nicest hotel in Guangzhou so if you’re in the area it won’t be hard to find as a reference.

Back to the bar; first of all, it is owned and operated by an Irishman and he does an outstanding job of keeping it authentic. All of the traditional food and beverages were authentic to Dublin and quite good. I entered the joint at around 1630 on a Saturday and there were many folks already there watching rugby and cricket; usually a good sign. As it turns out, I left around 0100 and had an incredible night. I had the pleasure of meeting several expats from the area who gave me their numbers to get together on follow-on trips. The prices are extremely reasonable and there is no shortage of any traditional beer or whiskey you might need in this foreign land. If you find yourself in this area, make sure you stop by the Paddy Field. You won’t regret it!

London Pub Crawl - Trip Report

Had a few trips to London this month--in fact, if you're reading this on the date stamp on this article, I'm there now--and because I've seen most of the typical tourist sites over the years I decided to set up a little excursion to burn up a couple of hours. Doing a little planning from home I did a search on the Internet for London Pub Crawls and found a kickass site, Beer In The Evening. A part of their site is Pub Crawls, where you can build your own crawl or have them do it for you. To build your own just select the area of London you prefer, click how many pubs you want to visit and how far you're willing to walk between pubs. They give you the address, picture of the pub and a rating. I took the pub locations and loaded them on Google Maps for a convenient guide. I actually built six crawls in various parts of London; Kensington, near our hotel, Bayswater, north side of Hyde Park, Mayfair, near the US Embassy, Fleet Street, formerly the city's journalism center, along the Thames River, and Tower Hill, near the Tower of London.

The weather wasn't really great for a pub crawl, cool and drizzly, duh, it's London, and even though the other two guys with me wimped out I set out for the Bayswater crawl. On the way I stopped off at Hyde Park's Speakers Corner, always a great location for some tense moments. If you're not familiar, Speakers Corner is a place where people gather on Sundays to hear various folks rant about almost any topic as long as it isn't profane or hate mongering, when that happens the Bobbies move in. One guy was slamming the French, another spouting socialism, but the best of the day was a Muslim v Jew confrontation. But, I had a mission and I was time limited so I had to press on.

After a short Tube ride I got off at Lancaster Gate on the north side of Hyde Park and walked a few blocks to the first pub, The Victoria. Now, I must admit, I only had an hour and half to visit the six pubs on my agenda, and with the walking involved, I pussied out and ordered half pints at each place. Here's something that was interesting as the pub crawl progressed, I got much smarter at each pub. First pub, took the picture of the place, went inside. Half way through that first beer I figured I should have the date stamp activated for the pictures. Couldn't figure that out. Second place, The Swan, right on Bayswater, immediately across the street from the park, I figured that I'd have a different beer in each place. At The Victoria I had a Kronenbourg 1664, so here at The Swan I got a Stella Artois. Third place, I came up with the idea of, in addition to a picture of the pub, taking a photo of the beer. Here at The Mitre, I had a Peroni. Fourth place, the Feinster Arms, I had a Carlsberg and decided I should be writing a few notes about each place but since I didn't have pen or paper that didn't happen but it was a kickass idea. Fifth place, the Prince Alfred, a nice Guinness, cold too. Finally, the sixth pub, The King's Head, I had a Fosters. Last two places no new ideas but beer was still tasty.

Interestingly, other than the Guinness, an ale, all the beers I had were lagers. French, Belgium, Italian, Danish, the Irish Guinness, and Australian; no Brit lagers. Unless you go to some UK microbrew pub you're not going to find one. They don't mass produce an English lager any more. Not sure why.

All the pubs were kickass. However, I consider the UK pub one of God's greatest creations so I'm easily pleased. Yes, some are more exciting, more fun and lively, others quiet and comfortable, but they all offer something unique. Now, just five more crawls to go.

Below is the documentation of my Bayswater pub crawl with a special added bonus at the end.

I didn't get to this place. A friend on the trip,
Guy, saw this out in east London. Kickass name!!
11-11-11-11. Time to Party?

A couple years ago, Borg and I, returning from a few months in Iraq, found ourselves, along with a couple other squadron mates, in the shopping district in Mainz, Germany and the city’s main square. Just before noon, we walked into the middle of a large, costumed, festival crowd. Having previously lived in Germany for four years, it suddenly came to me, we’d stumbled upon Fasching.

That’s what’s happening today in many parts of Germany the Carnival season, or Fasching began on the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 11:11AM, November 11. There always seems to be some kind of festival going on in Germany and Fasching is such a great time of year that it’s often referred to as the “fifth season.” This festival season runs from today, 11 November, until Ash Wednesday, which begins the forty day Christian Lent period of sacrifice and prayer leading up to Easter.

Council of Fools

Different parts of Germany celebrate Fasching differently, some even refer to the season by a different name, but, certainly, some of the best places to enjoy the festivities are in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn or Mainz. Big costume parades, drinking and merriment abound. Often a Council of Fools takes “control” of the city to help spread more cheer. This opening day of the “fifth season” is a kickass experience.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Germany for the beginning of Fasching, 11 November, or the final days prior to Ash Wednesday, seek out the festivities. You will be richly rewarded in fun times and fun people.

The Eagle Pub

Recently Borg and I had an opportunity to visit a pub in Cambridge, England that has a unique bit of fighter pilot history. The Eagle, haled as The RAF Pub, at 8 Benet Street is a World War II era establishment that was frequented by RAF and US Army Air Corps fighter pilots. It became a custom of fighter pilots to burn their names into the ceiling and walls of the pub. Those names are still visible having been varnished over.

Like most English pubs the beer is great, the pub food is quite tasty, the atmosphere outstanding and the clientele, locals and foreign, very enjoyable. The fighter pilot ambiance inside the pub and a great beer garden outside make it a kickass stop anytime of day.

The pub is owned by Corpus Christi College which we think is kickass. Every college/university should own a bar. We have a bar here at Fighter Pilot University but right now you can't get a beer there.

An interesting side to the Eagle Pub history is that it’s a place that was frequented by molecular biologists Francis Crick and James Watson. It was here, in the Eagle Pub, in February 1958, that the two men interrupted the noon lunch service to announce to patrons that they had “discovered the secret of life.” Crick and Watson had indeed determined the structure of DNA and later would be awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. That’s pretty kickass, two brainiacs enjoying the confines of a fighter pilot bar.

Overall the Eagle Pub was a kickass experience and a highly recommended destination for anyone that enjoys a good beer and the little fighter pilot history to boot.

Homer recently returned from two weeks of fighting MIG-29s and Grippens at Kechemet AB, Hungary. It was the first large scale deployment of U.S. fighters since they joined NATO. It was surrounded by a wine festival within walking distance of the hotel. They had a roll call in the MIG-29 bar and sang the AMRAAM Song and posted a "F--K Communism" sign on the wall. Good clean fun.

Homer sent us two pictures from crossing the pond on the deployment rote. They were taken over Nova Scotia right before he went feet wet. Looks like Homer got a little tired of flying single seat for the 10 hour trip over. Who says fighter guys can't join the Mile High club!
Fred's Lounge

Recently, Borg and I traveled to one of the most unique bars anywhere in the world. We took our wives and some friends to Mamou, Louisiana, a three hour drive northwest of New Orleans, an hour north of Lafayette. There in this small Cajun town is Fred’s Lounge. What makes Fred’s Lounge so special? It’s only open one day a week, Saturday, from 7:30AM to 2PM. Yes, pretty much just Saturday morning. Beyond that, they have live really kickass Cajun/Zydeco bands that make the bar really jump.

Fred’s Lounge is not big, maybe 1200 square feet. If you get there early, before nine, you can take in some of the atmosphere and watch the band set up. At nine the band kicks in, a local radio station begins live coverage and the people begin to pour in. Eventually there’ll be 150-200 people with most of them dancing a cajun jig or two-step.

The place is run by quite a character, Tante Sue, Fred’s widow (he moved on in 1992). She’ll sing a few songs herself and maybe even offer you a swig of her “Hot Damn” cinnamon schnapps that she carries on her hip in a leather holster.

Borg, Tante Sue, Bent and Rowdy

Fred’s Lounge is world renowned. The day we were there we talked to folks from California, Florida and Maine, in addition to a German couple. Apparently it’s mentioned on a French travel brochure as an “American must see.” Celebrities of all sorts have visited the place. Each of the major US television networks have done a stories about Fred’s.

Mamou is a bit out of the way but it’s well worth the trip. The music is awesome. The people, locals and tourists, great. It’s a unique, exciting, fun experience. Fighter Pilot University gives Fred’s Lounge its highest recommendation.

Saddlehorn Saloon

If you’re cruising around Tucson on a booze quest, I suggest you take the time to experience one of FU’s favorite libation replenishers. The Saddle Horn Saloon is located at 6300 E Tanque Verde which is east and north of Davis Monthan AFB. From the base it’s about ten minutes in the always necessary cab. This joint has pictures of all the true American heroes like John Wayne and Clint placed on almost every square inch of wall space. They don’t believe in fruit drinks and the beer is so cold you might piss ice cubes for the rest of the day.

I’ve been hanging out in there for going on 14 years when I find myself in Arizona and I haven’t met a bad patron in the place as of yet. You may run into a state senator, a miner, a retired fighter pilot, a hippie, or just your run-of-the-mill drunk but you’re definitely going to make new friends if you take my advice and stop by.

On Wednesday nights they serve a steak that will make your mouth water but you better get there early if you want to partake. They don’t serve them for very long. I personally like to day-drink there on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. If you go there on Sunday for football, later in the evening you can walk about 60 yards north and experience the Cow Pony. Another fine establishment for the inebriated connoisseur. I’ll write them a plug at another date. You also have Pinnacle Peak steaks and Hooters right there in the vicinity. Just think…old west style, kickass bar, steaks everywhere, and titties just across the street with even more beer. I don’t know if I found heaven but I can see it from there.
