Happy 4th of July to all you red blooded Americans out there. Enjoy the day with your family on the lake, golf course, in your backyard burning some meat, and of course enjoy the fireworks in your town tonight. It's a great day for all Americans and all who still love America to remember how our homeland was paid for with the blood of patriots over 234 years ago. For our international students, we invite you to join us in a day we celebrate freedom. I know it's corny, but you gotta love this video where Red Skelton explains the meaning of something we Americans take for granted, the Pledge of Allegiance. Take it away Red------

I----meaning me, an individual, a committee of one.
Pledge----dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self pity.
Allegiance----my love and my devotion.
To the Flag----our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there is respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.
Of the United----that means that we have all come together.
States----individual communities that have united into 48 great states. 48 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common cause, and that's love of country.
And to the Republic----a republic, a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.
For which it stands!
One nation----meaning, so blessed by God.
Indivisible----incapable of being divided.
With Liberty----which is freedom and the right of power to live one's life without threats or fear or any sort of retaliation.
And justice----The principle and quality of dealing fairly with others.
For all.----which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine."

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our nation, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance "under God." Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said, "That's a prayer" and that would be eliminated from schools, too?

Ironmen Farewell

Two major farewells occur at Langley AFB, Virginia in mid-June. The last F-15 squadron at Langley, the 71st Fighter Squadron Ironmen, is closing and, with that, the F-15 Eagle will also end it's stay at the base. The 71st plans a week of festivities celebrating the Ironmen and the F-15 history. Eagle drivers and maintainers alike are welcome to take part in the activities 14-20 June 2010. World War I, the Great War, brought about the evolution of a new kind of warrior, a gallant, courageous hero that the masses revered, adored and yearned to be near. This new breed of combatant was, of course, the fighter pilot and that devotion of the general public remains the same to this very day. But, beyond that, how did this fearless, knight of the sky come to fruition? How did these machines, that were nothing more than flying kites at the beginning of the war, become feared weapons of destruction but at the same time were, and are, admired for the beauty of their craftsmanship and elegance of their lines?

The Great War In the Air: Aces of the Western Front is a film that answers both of these questions. This is required curriculum here at Fighter Pilot University. We will be bringing you the pertinent bits of this film so that you are thoroughly schooled in the historic beginnings and the birth of the fighter pilot.

Almost thirty years ago, eight fighter pilots flew a mission that drastically changed the direction of history. That mission reverberated around the world. Amazingly, today, given the state of international affairs, that mission has become even more significant and could very well be an indicator of events yet to come. Should a similar undertaking become necessary, the ramifications will far exceed those that circled the globe close to three decades ago.

The video below is a historical examination of this mission which occurred in 1981. At Fighter Pilot University, we say "Fighter Pilots Make History." This video is just another example of that. It's also an example of history that may yet be written.

When negotiations fail or are unacceptable, when clandestine operations aren't an option, fighter pilots often become a nation's weapon of choice.
