Navy Songs

Posted by Jolly on March 25, 2012

vf54patch.jpgI had some VF-54 songs forwarded to me by “Tail Hook Jack.”  VF-54 can trace its lineage back to 1928.  They were formed in 1928 and were called “The
Copperheads” until 1951 when they changed their image a bit and became “Hells Angels.”  I must say, Hells Angles is a kickass name for a fighter squadron.

VF-54 flew everything from Corsairs to F-9s.   Hell’s
Angels flew combat missions in both WW II and Korea before being retired in 1958.  When warriors go off to War we sing songs to pass the time.  I think you can tell from this site that singing songs was a large part of my exprerience in fighter squadrons.  Some of the songs are rated R, but when you're not sure about returning from the next mission you get creative.  Beer and singing songs just seems to go together I guess.

I’ve attached Jack’s e-mail below where he mentionsvf-54_corsair.jpg singing in "The Yellow Bar" with Hells Angels.  One thing we are lacking here is Navy songs.  I know you guys have some great songs you would sing at the bar, so send them in and I’ll get them posted.  I'll post the song he sent below, along with a You Tube video of the Army Version so you can hear the tune.  The Army version is actually pretty damn good.  Jumping out of perfectly good airplane takes some guts.  Keep the songs coming boys and girls.  Thanks Jack for forwarding this.

Jacks E-mail:

WE HAD A QUARTET THAT SANG THESE SONGS AT THE "YELLOW BAR" IN THE PHILIPPINES AND FOR THAT WE GOT FREE DRINKS. HOPE YOU LIKE THEM.

SUNG TO THE TUNE OF: “THE BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC”

HE ROLLED OUT ON FINAL AND WAS JUST A LITTLE LOW.

HE IGNORED THE WAVE-OFF OF THE FRANTIC LSO.

WHEN HE FINALLY ADDED POWER, HE WAS JUST A LITTLE SLOW.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS:

GLORY, GLORY, WHAT A HELL OF A WAY TO DIE.

SON OF A GORY, GORY, WHAT A HELL OF A WAY TO DIE.

GLORY, GLORY, WHAT A HELL OF A WAY TO DIE.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

HE SHOULD HAVE ADDED POWER WHEN HE PULLED BACK ON THE STICK.

HE SHOULD HAVE FLOWN IT LIKE A BIRD INSTEAD OF LIKE A BRICK.

NOW ALL’S THAT LEFT OF HIM IS JUST A LITTLE OIL SLICK.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

HIS BRAINS WERE ON THE CANOPY; HIS GUTS WERE ON THE FLOOR.

HIS ARM STUCK OUT THE GREENHOUSE AND HIS LEG STUCK OUT THE DOOR.

HIS TEETH WERE ON THE JOY STICK IN A DEATHLY SORT OF GRIN.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

THE OTHER DAY I HEARD A VERY HAIRY TALE,

THE GUPPY HAD A CONTACT, BUT IT ONLY WAS A WHALE.

THE GATOR FLEW A THOUSAND MILES IN WILD PURSUIT OF HIM.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

THE HECKLERS GO OUT EARLY AND THEY REALLY HAVE A BALL.

THEY SHOT UP TRUCKS AND LOCOS AND THERE STORIES ARE QUITE TALL.

THEY DROP A FLARE AND THEN THEY SHOUT THAT’S WHERE HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

NOW HERE’S A TOAST TO THOSE THAT WEAR THOSE NAVY WINGS OF GOLD.

SOME SAY THEY ARE DARING AND SOME SAY THEY ARE BOLD.

THEY’LL ALWAYS GET YOU STINKING DRUNK, IN EVER PORT YOUR IN,

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

HE TOOK OFF IN THE MORNING AT THE BREAK OF DAY,

HE LOOKED DOWN ON THE TASK FORCE AS HE FLEW ALONG HIS WAY.

HE MADE A DIVE ON YANGDOCK, AND HE THOUGHT IT WAS SONGJIN.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

WE SOMETIMS SPOT FOR CRUISES AND IT’S QUITE A THING TO SEE,

THEY BLAME ALL THEIR MISSES ON THE PLANES FROM CHERRY TREE,

BUT WE’RE THE GUYS THAT GET THE FLAK, THEY NEVER SHOOT AT THEM.

AND WE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

NOW HERBIE LEADS THE CORSAIRS AND A WARRIOR TRUE IS HE.

EVERY TIME HE GETS BACK HOME HE WANTS A DFC.

HE’S FLOWN FORTY HOPS AND FOULED UP ALL OF THEM.

AND HE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

AND THERE’S THE BOYS WHO FLY THE JETS TO STOP THE HEAVY FLAK.

WE’LL STAY AND HIT THE TARGET WHILE THE JETS ARE HEADING BACK.

THEY HAD A VERY HAIRY HOP, GOT DOWN TO ANGELS TEN.

AND THEY’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS

WE FLEW UP TO THE TARGET AND A SCREAMING VOICE SAID FLAK.

HE DIDN’T GIVE HIS CALL SIGN AND A CHILL RUN UP MY BACK.

I WAS AT THE BOMB LINE AND HE WAS AT HYESANGIN.

AND WE’LL NEVER FLY HOME AGAIN.

CHORUS
